Tirupati Illustrations: Celebrating the Culture and Traditions of Tirumala and Tirupati

Environmental Graphics that Welcome Visitors into the Heart of Andhra Pradesh

The inspiration for these illustrations were the elements used in a typical Hindu ritual - the incense smoke and the flowers offered to the deities. Colors strongly associated with temples are used - golds, reds and blues.

The Tirupati International Airport now boasts a stunning addition to its walls - the Tirupati Illustrations. Designed by the talented Rucha Ghadge, these environmental graphics capture the essence of the culture, identity, and traditions of the people of Tirumala and Tirupati. As one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage spots in India, Tirumala and Tirupati are considered the "Spiritual Capital of Andhra Pradesh."

The Tirumala Venkateswara temple, a famous pilgrimage site, attracts millions of devotees each year. The people of Tirumala and Tirupati are known for their simplicity and devotion, with rituals and customs permeating their everyday lives. The Tirupati Illustrations serve as a warm welcome to visitors, immersing them in the rich culture and traditions of the region.

These illustrations were initially designed as wall graphics for the airport, but their potential extends beyond that. They can also be used for promotional merchandise, showcasing the beauty and spirituality of Tirumala and Tirupati to tourists from around the world.

Creating these illustrations presented a unique challenge - striking a balance between respect for the culture and a modern aesthetic. Rucha Ghadge successfully navigated this challenge, ensuring that the illustrations are both reverential and visually captivating.

Technically, the illustrations can be realized through two methods. The first involves marking out the graphics with the help of a projector for guidance and then hand-painting them on the designated walls. Alternatively, they can be digitally printed on wallpapers and pasted onto the walls, ensuring a precise and vibrant representation of the artwork.

The Tirupati Illustrations project commenced in November 2018 and was completed within a span of two weeks. To ensure authenticity and accuracy, Rucha Ghadge conducted extensive research, including interviews with pilgrims who have visited the temple and locals who are deeply rooted in the culture and traditions of Tirumala and Tirupati.

These remarkable illustrations have not gone unnoticed. In 2019, the Tirupati Illustrations were awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category. This prestigious accolade recognizes designs that exhibit exceptional creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to the improvement of quality of life.

The Tirupati Illustrations stand as a testament to the power of design in celebrating and preserving cultural heritage. They invite visitors into the heart of Andhra Pradesh, immersing them in the spirituality and traditions that define Tirumala and Tirupati.
